Mapping the Cochlear Implant - A Parent's Guide to Understanding a Cochlear Implant Programming

Programming of the cochlear implant, or what is commonly called a "Mapping", refers to the setting of the electrical stimulation limits necessary for the cochlear implant user to "hear" soft and comfortably loud sound. Since the Cochlear Implant can only process sounds in a very narrow range (6-15 dB), it must be able to compress the natural range of sounds (normal speech is usually between 40-60 dB) into this small band.

Due to the this small range of sound that a cochlear implant is limited to, CI users are more sensitive to loudness changes. Therefore, "stimulation levels" must be set so the sounds processed by the cochlear implant should not cause discomfort to the CI user. These stimulation levels correspond to psychophysical (i.e. sensory responses to outside stimuli) measurements known as Threshold (T) and Comfort (C or M) Levels. During the mapping process, the "T" and "C" levels of each individual electrode on the cochlear implant's internal electrode array (the spiral located inside the inner ear or "cochlea") are adjusted in order for the user to hear the wide range of sounds that one is typically exposed to (soft to loud).

Threshold levels are set to allow the user access to soft speech and outside sounds. Comfort Levels refers to the amount of electrical current one needs for perception of a comfortably loud 'beeping' signal. These measurements are downloaded into the speech processor, and then incorporated into a coding strategy, which the processor uses to send the electric signals to the internal implant in an organized manner. The processor will not allow the signals entering it to exceed these set measurements.

Mapping the Cochlear Implant - A Parent's Guide to Understanding a Cochlear Implant Programming

Each MAP is individual to its user and is constantly changing. Over time, MAPs may become weak, softer, or less clear. This may be the result of tissue growth, or the user becoming used to their MAP and 'adapts' to it, finding that over time, it may no longer be a loud enough signal. Re-programming the device will compensate for the changes that may occur due to adaptation.

Threshold (T-levels) measurements may be obtained in several ways, depending the age or functioning level of the patient. For children over age six, a hand raising method is used to determine T-Levels (similar to a hearing test). For children under three, a different method is used, where the child is trained to look at a moving toy in response to sound. The stimulation is then reduced until the lowest level that the child is able to detect the sound. Typically, two audiologists are used; one training the child and one manipulating the computer controls.

For children between the ages of three and six, play audiometery is used. The child is trained to place a block in a box in response to electrical stimulation. The stimulation is reduced to the lowest detectable level.

Comfort level measurements may also be obtained in several ways, depending the age or functioning level of the patient. For children over 5, a loudness scaling chart or verbal response is used to determine Comfort Levels. For children under age five, the comfort levels may have to be estimated, using the threshold levels or other objective measures as a reference.

The mapping report provides printed out information on map parameters, threshold and comfort level settings. Parents' understanding of this report is not necessary in the child's progress with the device. It is merely a print-out of the settings created during the mapping session. It should be used only be used as a reference for the mapping audiologist.

What may be helpful to the parent is a report of what is in each program slot. The parents should be given instructions as to when or whether to change programs; which program may be designated for an FM System; which may be a back-up program or an old program; which may be a noise program, etc.

When a mapping is performed efficiently, the user will have hearing within a normal to near-normal hearing range. Parents may use the mapping sessions to discuss progress at home, school, and in therapy. Questions and problem issues may also be addressed. The mapping audiologist will give recommendations on if and when to change programs as well as when a follow-up appointment should be made.

Fear of Holes - Trypophobia

Many people think they are the only one in the world who are unnerved by holes. Not all holes mind you, just tiny holes in asymmetrical clusters, often times with things in them. Like a lotus seed pod. Most people when faced with this fear start to feel really uncomfortable and a creepy, itchy feeling crawls over their body.

The types of holes trypophobics fear fall into the following categories;

Flesh

Fear of Holes - Trypophobia

Holes which occur in different types of tissues, human and animal, this is quite a big category. Human pores on their skin, if enlarged, blackheads, pockmarks left by acne or other skin disorders. Holes in skin caused by creatures that may have eaten through the skin creating a hole.

Food

Cheese that has holes may seem the most obvious but there is also honeycomb. In types of meat holes are found and I think these are to allow veins through. There are lots of completely disgusting holes found in various types of offal. I believe that sweetbreads are particularly good for finding holes in.

Flora

Those dried seed pods you get in pot pourri.

Burrowing

This is about things like worms and maggots and stuff eating into things and creating holes in materials and foods.

Geological

Holes that are created naturally like from the ocean creating holes in rocks.

Other

Holes created in ice and snow as it melts.

Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP fast phobia techniques and methods help in quick elimination and eradication of phobia of holes.

NLP shows you how to understand and model your own successes, so that you can reproduce them. It is a way of discovering and unfolding your personal genius, a way of bringing out the best in yourself and others.

NLP is the study of excellence. It is the study of both the conscious and unconscious processes that combine to enable people to do what they do. The key to success is often unknown at a conscious level. Using NLP you can elicit these unknown pieces.

You may want to improve your relationships, or eliminate an anxiety, or become more competitive in the market place. The key pieces are not found in the muscles, but in your inner thoughts, like words or pictures, or feelings or even beliefs. Once you know these unknown pieces you can change them. NLP exercises are like thought experiments, mental exercises or a game. The laboratory is your mind.

So next time you see holes in something spare a thought for the thousands of people that suffer from trypophobia.

Success to Success - What is the Meaning of Success in Life?

What a wonderful word, and concept.

People have been striving for it all their life, and many achieving Success, and others are not so fortunate. It seems to elude them, and their life. Many have been pursuing Success for years, and others start towards it and seem to find it almost immediately. It is a concept that wars have been fought over. Success to one man was the capture and domination of another. And it has been that way for eons.

The meaning of Success comes in many forms, and many definitions. It depends on what you are searching for in life, and searching for in business. Athletes may have one definition of Success, and a stay at home mom may have another. A musician may see Success as a number one hit, and a Doctor may see Success as a surgery that went well. It really depends on the perspective of life you have. Perspectives on Success are as numerous as the stars.

Success to Success - What is the Meaning of Success in Life?

But we need to start narrowing down an understanding of Success:

There is a difference between Accomplishment, Success, and True Success.

Lets' explore this briefly.

Accomplishment is where you have engaged in the task or action that you attempted, and have obtained the desired results. It is a based on what was expected, and what results were done. This is a daily happening in the world and marketplace. People accomplish things all day long, but really achieve no Success in those actions.

Success is something different.

Success to most people is when you have an ongoing string of accomplshments that when put together, add up to a major obtainment in life known as Success. The addition of all the accomplishments in a person's career or life can be viewed as Success in their life and business.

Success then is an ongoing realization and obtainment of worthy desired results, concerning actions, life, business, wealth, or a worthy ideal.

But there is even a higher level of Success.

There is a more powerful level of High Achievement.

That is why we call the Path to Success "Success to Success." It is Biblical that we all move from Glory to Glory, and we all must move from one level of Success to another.

It is called "True Success."

True Success is simply the realization and obtainment of a worthy ideal or result that your heart is deeply connected to it. It is what births PASSION and your SUCCESS PASSION. It is what people die for. It is why some people explode out of the gates and create Success easily, and others struggle all their life. They are operating on a whole different realm of Success and actions.

It is a Success that is SOAKED with Emotion, Powered by Passion, Driven by Destiny, and Forged with the Fire of the Heart.

There is is no more powerful Success than the Success that the heart is welded to it by the Fire of Passion.

Then we would say that Success and your heart have a definite connection in any type of True Success, and any kind that is long term.

That is why that many athletes and artists have long careers. Their heart is attached to their Success. That is why entrepreneurs many times have long careers. They are operating in their Passion and True Success Power. Many business people today have experienced True Success in their life on an ongoing basis.

Have you?

People accomplish things everyday. They accomplish results and more. People Succeed everyday in the marketplace and on the athletic field, as well as the professional field. The home field with raising successful children is one of the greatest True Success passions there is.

But few obtain True Success.

Why?

True Success has to be Passion driven, with a heart OnFIRE. True Success is birthed from a Dream that cannot be denied. It is driven by a hunger that cannot be stopped. It is driven by a focus that is unrelenting. It is driven by actions that will not be contained. And it is driven by a Force that knows no failure.

What is Success?

That is up to you. But it is not just accomplishment. It is beyond that.

The steady realization of a moral and worthy ideal is Success to most folks.

The steady realization of a dream and an ideal that is driven by the heart and Passion that will not, cannot, and will never be denied is Success to a few folks.

Those few folks not only know the meaning of Success, but also the experience of a Deeper and Higher level of Success.

They are driven by Success, not just pursuing it.

And within that little difference is the meaning and power between Success and True Success.

blessings...doug

Access Visual Basic and Excel VBA Macros - A Comparison of the MS Office Programming Languages

Similarities between Excel VBA and Access VBA

In theory it should be easy to switch from one MS Office VBA programming language to another, since all the underlying principles are the same. It doesn't matter whether you're writing VBA macros within Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint or Word, you're still using:

- objects, collections, methods and properties

Access Visual Basic and Excel VBA Macros - A Comparison of the MS Office Programming Languages

- variables (the DIM statement)

- IF conditions and loops

- message boxes and input boxes

- subroutines and functions

In fact, the only thing which is different is the object and collections defined within the application. So how hard can it be to switch from (say) Excel VBA to Access VBA? The answer, sadly, is... fairly hard. Here's why!

Differences between Excel Visual Basic and Access Visual Basic

The main differences between the two programming languages are that Access supports two macro languages, doesn't support recording, has two different ways to create Visual Basic macros, hides a lot of its functionality in the DoCmd object and has two separate object models. If that didn't make much sense, worry not - the rest of this article will explain each of these points in turn.

Access has Two Macro Languages

This is a red herring. Microsoft Access has two separate languages for writing macros: one called macros, the other called either modules or Visual Basic. If you have any knowledge of VBA, you should ignore the first; it is provided for people who have no programming experience, and doesn't support proper looping, error-handling and many other structures. So although the Access database window contains a MACROS tab, you should ignore this completely!

Access doesn't Support Recording

Want to know how to colour a cell red with pink spots in Excel? If you can't guess the macro command (unlikely), you can just record a macro and have a look at the resulting code. This is a vital aide-memoire even when you're a VBA guru.

Access, on the other hand, doesn't support recording - not even in the latest version at the time of writing, Access 2010. This is, to say the least, a shame (interestingly, while Word supports VBA recording, PowerPoint doesn't any more: Microsoft removed the facility from version 2007 onwards). This means that you're often forced to resort to Google, Microsoft help or phoning a friend to find out how to do something in Access VBA.

Two Different Ways to Write Macros in Access

Want to create a VBA macro in Access? To do this, you need to go to the VBA code editor. Strangely, you can do this in two different ways: either press ALT + F11 as normal, or click on the Modules tab in the database window and choose to create a new module. Why are there two different ways to do the same thing? Historical reasons, we think.

Access Uses the DoCmd Object for Many Commands

Access VBA is complicated (or simplified?) by the fact that about half the commands begin with DoCmd. For example:

DoCmd.OpenForm - to open a form

DoCmd.Maximize - to maximise a window

Features like this make Excel a far more logical programming language than Access.

Access has Two Separate Object Models

Excel is pretty self-contained (although if you're creating your own dialog boxes, you'll be using a separate applications called Microsoft Forms). Access, however, splits into two almost equal parts:

- tables and queries are part of the Access database engine

- forms, reports, macros and modules are part of the Microsoft Access application

Although you'll probably only hit this complication when you get into advanced programming in Access, it's another Access feature to muddy the VBA water.

In summary, then, we'd say that Excel macros are far more straightforward than Access ones. Added to this is the fact that it's much quicker to learn Excel than it is to learn Access, and you get two unequal learning curves!

Mathematics in Computer Programming

Mathematics is applicable in various traditional fields of engineering: mechanical and electrical engineering are among them. Mathematics is used in computer engineering too.

Mathematical logic is used in the decision making, so it is used in computer programming. As Venn diagrams are helpful in understanding the concepts of logic, they are also helpful in the programming. For instance, De Morgan's laws are used in writing statements involving decisions and Venn diagrams are helpful in understanding these laws.

Calculations are also important in the science of computers. The text you read on the computer screen is presented in a particular format. Calculations are certainly needed for these.

Mathematics in Computer Programming

Geometry is used in the development of graphics. Actually a graphics screen resembles the co-ordinate plane. Just as we have points in the co-ordinate plane, we have pixels on the graphics screen. Though there are endlessly many points in any bounded part of the plane, while the number of pixels on the graphics screen is limited, yet the techniques of coordinate geometry can be used in drawing various figures on the graphics screen.

Various transformations play a part in the development of software. Two such transformations are famous as 'pop and push transformations'. As the graphs are useful in understanding different kinds of transformations, these help understand, in particular the Pop and Push transformations too.

The classical computer programming language namely 'the C language' makes a lot of use of mathematics. Different graphics commands of this language are based on the mathematical logic. The commands for making the background make use of hexadecimal numbers.
